Our English curriculum day was around the theme of commemorative poetry to mark Remembrance Day. Children were asked to use the poetry to reflect on the sacrifices of those who fought in wars throughout British history and empathise with soldiers and their families. As part of their understanding of British History, children were asked to explain how songs and music were used to boost morale amongst the soldiers, give them hope and remember those waiting for them back home. They were also the only link with the outside world at some outposts. Each year group selected a poem, song lyrics or music to study as well as focus on a significant individual.
